The Home weather station measures temperature, wind and precipitation. It also provides a graphical weather forecast for 12 hours in icons and it has a memory for the recorded weather data of the last 25 days.
Vantage Pro2 – The equipment
The Davis Vantage Pro2 is a wireless radio weather station with a range of 300 meters in outdoor areas from the Vantage Home weather station series. This is significantly more than conventional weather stations from other manufacturers.
We ourselves have – in contrast to other weather stations – no connection problems with both Davis weather stations in our test. But should problems occur: The range can be extended up to 1.5 km with the repeater 629382-62.
The Vantage Pro2 is the smallest version of the Vantage weather stations from Davis. It consists of an indoor unit with LCD Weather Center button and a self-contained outdoor unit. The Davis Vantage Pro2 base unit is placed on the table. A slight tilt for operation and reading of the display is achieved by the folding stand. The displays and functions include:

The outdoor sensor of the Vantage Pro2, Davis calls the ISS (“Integrated Sensor Suite”), consists of one element. Thus, the ISS contains all sensors that determine weather data in the outdoor area.
The anemometer is, contrary to the Vantage Pro 2, not externally fixed, but belongs to the ISS. The outdoor sensor consists of a wind turbine, a precipitation dish and a wind vane.
Sensor installation of the Vantage Pro2
Vantage Pro2 is much easier to install than its big brother, the Vantage Pro2. This is due to the fact that all elements of the outdoor sensor are already included in the ISS. Only four add-on parts have to be attached to the outdoor sensor.
First, the anemometer, i.e. the wind turbine, is attached to the upper axis of the ISS. A small grub screw fixes the wind turbine on the axle. The necessary hexagon wrench is included with the Vantage Pro2 Home weather station.
The wind vane is then placed on the lower axle of the ISS. Make sure that the last millimetres of the axle have been milled, i.e. that the end of the axle is no longer round.
The wind vane is simply attached from below and turned until the modified axle fits through the hole in the weather vane and can be seen. A screw connection is not necessary here.
From now on, particular care must be taken when handling the sensor unit, because the anemometer and the weather vane must be turned so that they do not break off when the ISS is placed on the table top, for example.
Now the rain gauge is attached below the ISS. This is also very easy, because a wrong installation can be excluded thanks to the unique design. A knurled screw secures the rain gauge to the ISS.
The next step is to insert a small sieve into the inlet to the rain gauge. This is to prevent dirt from getting into the rain gauge.
Also integrated into the ISS is a solar module which supplies the outdoor unit with the necessary power when the sun shines. A CR123 battery is included in the scope of delivery. The voltage of this battery is required when the solar cells do not supply any voltage. The 3-volt battery lasts for around two years.
Prepared in this way, the ISS can now be placed on a mast and screwed together with the U-bracket provided. Unlike the Vantage Pro2, whose sensor unit and anemometer can be mounted on a mast or on a house wall, the ISS of the Vantage Pro2 is only intended to be mounted on the end of a round mast.
The mast required for mounting is not included. We have mounted our Vantage Pro2 for our Home weather station test on the end of a standard fence pole without any problems. According to Davis, the mast can have a diameter between 25 and 44 mm.
In the test, the mounting height of the outdoor unit was a more important indicator for accurate readings. It is recommended that a mounting height of at least 2.50 metres be planned. Professional weather measurement systems measure the wind at a height of 10 metres.
Connecting the Vantage Pro2 with your Computer
The base station can be connected to the PC via the home network. However, the necessary adapter for LAN or USB, the data logger, is not included and must be purchased separately from Davis. This is very cost-intensive at around $200.
With the corresponding software, which is included in the scope of delivery of the data logger, the collected weather data can be evaluated on the PC. It is also possible to send the data to the Davis server. There the status data can then be called up in simplified form via the Internet. If desired, this query can be secured with a password.

The question of which method now promises more success cannot be answered unambiguously. Although there is usually some truth in the farmer’s rules, they often cannot keep up with modern digital measuring methods.
Does the weather frog really exist?
Besides spiders and swallows, frogs are also said to have the ability to predict the weather. This assumption is based on the observed behaviour that tree frogs climb up plants in good weather, whereas they stay close to the ground in rain.
For this reason, they used to be locked into glass jars with a ladder, so that by climbing up and down they could get supposed clues about the coming weather.
In reality, however, the only reason for this is that the insects, which are the frogs’ food, fly higher in the sun than in bad weather. The behaviour of the frogs in the jar is therefore completely meaningless.
Nevertheless, the term has proven to be a common term for male weather presenters and meteorologists until today.
How and where do I best place the sensors of a Home weather station?
In the best case, the sensors should be placed in such a way that the measured values are not distorted by influences other than the weather. The location of the sensors best meets the following criteria:
- No heating or other heat source in the immediate vicinity
- Thermometer best protected from the sun, e.g. on the north side of the house
- Wind measurement preferably not along house walls or near large trees
Direct solar radiation, if this is to be measured
Which software do I need on my PC for WiFi Home weather stations?
If you would like to operate your Home weather station a little more professionally, there is no getting around the purchase of special software. These are partly available as freeware, whereby these programs are of limited help.
